The newly described species are Nannizziopsis dermatitidis, Nannizziopsis crocodili, Nannizziopsis barbata, Nannizziopsis infrequens, Nannizziopsis hominis, Nannizziopsis obscura, Paranannizziopsis australasiensis, Paranannizziopsis californiensis, and Paranannizziopsis crustacea. nov., with three new species infecting squamates and tuataras. Two other lineages comprise the genus Ophidiomyces, with the species Ophidiomyces ophiodiicola occurring only in snakes, and Paranannizziopsis gen. guarroi, and six additional species encompassing isolates from chameleons and geckos, crocodiles, agamid and iguanid lizards, and One lineage represents the genus Nannizziopsis and comprises N. Although cover sheets were effective to sample snakes in early successional sites, multiple techniques may be needed in more heterogeneous habitats. Microclimates under sheets likely attracted potential prey and snakes to cover sheets. Additionally, fewer mortalities of snakes and nontarget vertebrates were associated with cover sheets. Cover sheets were less expensive to construct, maintain, and remove than were drift fence-trap configurations. Size distributions of snakes differed by method of capture, with cover sheets yielding proportionately more small-bodied snakes. More species were captured with drift fence-trap configurations. We considered various capture methods and compared the effectiveness of plastic cover sheets and drift fence-trap configurations to sample local snake populations.
#Eastern milksnake captive series
Species richness, relative abundance, and size distribution of snakes were the parameters we were interested in sampling by capturing snakes on a series of habitat patches. We initiated an investigation of snakes in southeastern New Hampshire because we speculated that this taxon would be responsible to recent land-use changes. It seems this snake is becoming rarer and rare, and maybe one day we will actually learn the mystery of the Coastal Plain Milksnake.Landscape changes can affect species richness, population density, and condition of animals. Captive produced hybrids of these species also look identical to these snakes. Furthermore, the drawn-up range map did not include the Delmarva Peninsula, or anywhere north. The issue is, the snakes tested in NC were outside of the intergrade zone, and the two snakes tested in VA were from known Scarlet Kingsnake locals, that had never yielded Coastal Plain Milksnakes and the specimens tested did not appear to be Coastals either. The confusion comes from a recent study that tested snakes in North Carolina and Virginia and concluded that these are "all Scarlet Kingsnakes". They are known to occur from Virginia Beach, up to New Jersey. Historically, this snake has been considered an intergrade of the Eastern Milksnake and the Scarlet Kingsnake, and before that a subspecies of the Eastern Milksnake " Lampropeltis triangulum temporalis". The Coastal Plain Milksnake is an interesting snake.
